Youth
Young people are one of our most important assets in the movement for equality. The passion, emotion, and pure rage felt by today’s youth is what will push the movement toward the finish line.
Why It matters:
Young people are on the front lines of the movement; whether as a victim of bullying or as the organizer of a campus rally. They face unique issues of constant recruitment from the religious right, higher levels of homelessness, and one of the highest rates of youth suicide.
What We're Doing:
SAVE Dade is part of a network of local organizations focused on LGBT youth including the YES Institute, Pridelines Youth Services, Safe Schools South Florida, and the GLBTQ Alliance. We see our role as both the policy change arm of the community and an outlet for youth to engage in the equality movement.
SAVE Dade is working with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Sexual Minorities Project, led by Suzanne Milano-Berrios, to improve policies that protect the nations fifth largest school district.
In 2008, we saw a surge of campus support from University of Miami, Florida International University, and Miami-Dade College. SAVE Dade has continued to support campus organizing and has built a strong network of student-led organizations in Miami-Dade County.
How You Can Make A Difference:
You can be a part of our Adopt-A-Legislator Project and encourage lawmakers that anti-bullying laws that are inclusive of gay and transgender students makes sense for Florida.
Become a trained speaker by attending our Speaker’s Bureau Training and learn how to tell your story.
Get your campus organization or group involved by connecting them with us by emailing Field Officer David Valk at david@savedade.org.
