It seems like so much time has passed since Miami-Dade voters recalled Mayor Carlos Alvarez and Commissioner Natacha Seijas. It has been less than a year since that historic and proud moment for voters. Today, one week from the January 31st GOP Primary and Special Election, we see dismal turn out (again) of Countywide electors. With two important Charter Amendments on the ballot, I have spoken to dozens of voters whose apathy seems to override the desire for local change.

By now, almost 1 million Republicans have expressed an opinion on who should be the Party’s nominee for President. But on Saturday it will be the people of Florida who really shape the future of the race. Miami-Dade alone has more than 300,000 registered Republicans -- the state’s largest single block of votes. It is possible for a candidate to lose Miami-Dade and still win Florida, but it’s not easy.



Poll: Miami-Dade Voters Divided on Two County Charter Amendments on Primary Ballot

A frustrated electorate ousted Miami-Dade's mayor in a historic recall election last year that signaled voters' hunger for change, and distaste for business as usual at County Hall. 

Ten months later, however, a new poll has found that voters are divided - and largely uninterested in - two proposed county charter amendments hat could make it easier to mount citizen petition drives and dramatically alter term limits and salaries for county commissioners.

SAVE Dade’s mission is to promote, protect and defend equality for people in Miami-Dade County who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.  Established in 1993, SAVE Dade accomplishes this mission through education initiatives, outreach, grassroots organizing, and advocacy.  Starting with the landmark passage of Miami's Human Rights Ordinance in 1998 to recent enactments of domestic partner benefit policies, SAVE continues to lead the fight for LGBT equality in Miami-Dade County through grassroots action focused on civil rights, parental rights, and relationship recognition through political advocacy, community outreach, candidate endorsements.
