Relationship Recognition

Marriage is about love, commitment, and responsibility. Straight and gay couples want to marry for the same reasons. Banning people who are gay and lesbian from marrying removes their ability to take care of the one they love. Florida is one of the states where people who are gay and lesbian are not allowed to make legal lifelong promises to be responsible for one another.

Why It matters:

If we deny committed couples the security and legal protections of marriage, we unnecessarily hurt them. Simply put, it is wrong to make it harder for committed couples to take care of and be responsible for one another. Marriage possesses significant status in American society; denying it creates unneeded vulnerability for gay and lesbian couples.

What We're Doing:

  • In 2008, SAVE Dade worked on the ground to organize tens of thousands of voters and mobilized thousands of volunteers to conduct phonebanks, door-to-door canvasses, and fundraisers in support of marriage equality.
  • SAVE Dade has successfully passed Domestic Partnership Ordinances in Miami-Dade County, the City of Miami, the City of South Miami, and the City of Pinecrest in the past three years.
  • As a founding member of the Fair Visitation Committee, we created new policies that were inclusive of all “families” regardless of one’s sexual orientation or “traditional” familial status.
  • We continue to find ways to expand the rights associated with the County’s Domestic Partnership Registry.
  • SAVE Dade works with businesses to adopt Domestic Partnership policies to offer committed couples spousal benefits in healthcare and employment.
