Meet the Staff

CJ Ortuno, Executive Director, was the Director of Development for Hands On Miami, a non-profit social entrepreneur organization that builds community by engaging people in over 100 monthly volunteer action projects.  The first to achieve a college degree in his family, he graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.

Raised in Miami, Florida, CJ now lives in South Beach with his wife and 2-year-old daughter.  As a graduate from the 2008 Leadership Miami Class, he led a project that created an economic development software program for the City of Miami.  He is a member of the Miami Beach GLBT Business Enhancement Committee, PRIDE Parade Board, Miami-Dade LGBT Sub-Advisory Committee, Miami Beach Human Rights Commission, and Steering Committee Member of Florida Together.

CJ’s vision for a better Miami-Dade is one that is free of prejudice and inequality for all people.  He hopes to create a world where his daughter will be free to love without fear of discrimination.

David Valk, Field Director, was born and raised in southern California and is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles.  David began his involvement in the fight for LGBTQ equality as he marched with thousands of students in the streets of Los Angeles following the passage of Proposition 8.  Upon graduation, he continued to organize students and traveled across the country to build support for the National Equality March, and in October 2009, co-authored the National Student's Call to Action with civil rights giant, David Mixner.  The Call to Action garnered the support of over 100 college and university student body presidents who endorsed the March.

David is working to build sustainable grassroots support for SAVE Dade's advocacy and outreach programs, taking advantage of new tools including online and social media.  Through political and non-political community engagement, David continues to produce necessary support for SAVE Dade's initiatives, including electing pro-equality candidates.

David is a 2012 Fellow with the New Leaders Council of Miami.

Joshua Dunkelman - Director of Development - was born in New York and raised mostly in Cincinnati, Ohio. After attending boarding school in New York at Trinity- Pawling, he returned to Ohio for both college (Wittenberg) and graduate school (Ohio State), where he earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration.

Over the years Joshua has continued his commitment to equality, moving back to New York where he took an active role in LGBT causes while living on Fire Island in the Pines. We are glad to have Joshua living here in Southern Florida where he is also an active member of the Wolfsonian FIU's Visionary's Board and currently serving as one of the co-chairs of the MoCA Shakers.
