From the Field: 12x12 is Fighting Back
As the 2012 Florida legislative session starts this week and we gear up for our state's GOP primary on January 31, it is very apparent that election season has come into full swing. The blunt reality is that LGBT Floridians have been hit hard by extremist politicians who espouse anti-gay rhetoric as a means to rally votes. While Florida is no stranger to enacting discriminatory statewide policies, just last year, Florida legislators attacked all citizens with the passage of new voter laws that block groups from registering community members through traditional means of organizing. One thing is certain-- the stakes have never been higher and the need to fight back has never been more necessary. Floridians can fight back -- and we can fight back right now! Continue reading.

Brian McNaught: "When We Assume We're Wanted" As American lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender organizations think about expanding their services beyond U.S. borders, it’s really important to spend time asking if our services are wanted. Sometimes, even when we think we’re doing a good thing, other people don’t want or appreciate our help. For many years, as a favor to a dear friend who didn’t cook but who entertained often, I’d walk in the door and, with the very best intentions, head straight to the kitchen. She and I would go through the ritual of me asking “What can I do?” but it was understood, I thought, that I should just plunge in and take over. I was good at something she wasn’t good at. More recently, I learned that my taking over her kitchen each time wasn’t appreciated. I was stunned and hurt, until I accepted the fact that what might have been helpful at one time isn’t necessarily wanted forever. I take responsibility for not checking in to ask, “Is this really something you like me doing and want me to continue to do?” Continue reading.
Director of Development's Update On Friday, January 6th our dear friend and Guardian Angel Michael Larkin hosted an intimate cocktail reception on the roof deck of Ola - the fantastic Latin American restaurant on Miami Beach. The group consisted of current and potential donors we would like to bring into the family. The event was a tremendous success as our donors chatted with new people telling their personal stories and talking about the amazing advocacy work that SAVE Dade does to promote, protect and defend equal rights throughout Miami-Dade County. We are spectacularly grateful for the continued support of our Guardians especially this year - with the opportunity to elect pro-equality candidates here in Miami Dade County and across the state there has never been a more important time for us to spread the word about our work and our mission. Thank you to everyone that attended. To those that were not with us on Friday we look forward to seeing you soon at another event. Continue reading.
