A Film Series Aimed at Reconciling Faith Communities and the LGBT Communities
InterFaithOUT FILM SERIES: Reclaiming Our Faith
Co-Presented by InterFaithOUT, a committee of SAVE Dade, and The Wolfsonian–Florida International University
Exploring issues of spirituality and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) identity, these films and facilitated discussion series will focus on the journey for visibility and acceptance of LGBT individuals within religious communities throughout the world. Through soul-searching stories of deep conviction, people of all faiths can understand the struggles of LGBT peoples as those of valued members of a rich and diverse human community.
The series will be presented the second Sunday of the month in November, and December at 3:00 pm at The Wolfsonian–FIU auditorium. Each film is followed by a moderated discussion and reception. Admission to each film and reception is free, but reservations are required. Please RSVP online or contact SAVE Dade at 305-751-7283. For information about the Wolfsonian facilities, please contact the Wolfsonian box office at 305-531-1001.
“Fish Out of Water”, directed by Ky Dickens fill be featured on November 13th. Using animation and academic interviews to dissect the seven Bible verses, in both the Hebrew and Christian Bibles, used to condemn homosexuality and justify marriage discrimination, this documentary takes the subject, but not itself, too seriously. It explodes the conventional arguments of hate and exposes how the Bible is often misinterpreted and misquoted regarding same-sex relationships. Dr. Elsie Miranda, of the Department of Theology and Philosophy at Barry University, will moderate this film’s discussion.
The series concludes on December 11th with the 2001 documentary “Trembling Before G-d”, by Sandi Simcha Dubowski. Built around intimately told personal stories of Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who are gay or lesbian, the film portrays a profound dilemma…. How to reconcile their passionate love of Judaism with the drastic biblical prohibitions that forbid homosexuality. Rabbi Amy Morrison of Temple Beth Shalom in Miami Beach will lead the post-film discussion.
