Aging
As more LGBT Floridians get older, new challenges must be addressed by the broader LGBT community. It is estimated that by 2030, six-million LGBT senior citizens will live in the United States— many of whom will retire here in South Florida! The lack of attention brought to this issue is a major problem with little research or data being collected from within our community. Additionally, many LGBT senior citizens living with HIV/AIDS will face unknown dimensions of aging that require our attention.
Why It matters:
Miami-Dade County is home to many people living with HIV/AIDS. Early studies have found unique challenges specific to the LGBT aging population. Specific aging issues are compounded due to Florida’s lack of relationship-recognition for same-sex partners and its overall poor treatment of gay and transgender people in state government. LGBT senior citizens are faced with a higher level of stigma and prejudice as they prepare to make late-in-life decisions that make them more vulnerable to prejudice than the broader community.
What We're Doing:
As a member of the Miami Beach Mayor’s GLBT Business Enhancement Committee, SAVE Dade is working with community leaders and government officials to make Miami Beach a leader in LGBT aging support.
