A Valentine’s Day election brought victory yesterday to both of the pro-equality candidates endorsed by the SAVE Dade Action PAC.

Incumbent Mayor Philip Stoddard was re-elected with 57.5% of the vote and Josh Liebman was elected Commissioner in Group II with 52.9% of the vote. Both candidates were passionate in their support for LGBT equality and earned the endorsement of the SAVE Dade Action PAC after a questionnaire and in-person interview.

Miami Beach City Manager Jorge Gonzalez invited SAVE Dade Executive Director CJ Ortuño to help narrow the field in selecting the city’s new Chief of Police. Earlier this week, Ortuño spent one hour with each of the 11 candidates over the course of two days, asking over a dozen questions of each.

SAVE Dade Executive Director CJ Ortuño spoke to a group of about 40 LGBT youth from Pridelines Youth Services last week about the work that SAVE Dade does and how it is preparing for the upcoming election year.

SAVE Dade Executive Director CJ Ortuño will be speaking today about the local and statewide issues currently affecting LGBT people at the 1st Annual “State of Our Community” Luncheon. A frustrated electorate ousted Miami-Dade’s mayor in a historic recall election last year that signaled voters’ hunger for change, and distaste for business as usual at County Hall.

Ten months later, however, a new poll has found that voters are divided — and largely uninterested in — two proposed county charter amendments that could make it easier to mount citizen petition drives and dramatically alter term limits and salaries for county commissioners.

By now, almost 1 million Republicans have expressed an opinion on who should be the Party’s nominee for President. But on Saturday it will be the people of Florida who really shape the future of the race. Miami-Dade alone has more than 300,000 registered Republicans -- the state’s largest single block of votes. It is possible for a candidate to lose Miami-Dade and still win Florida, but it’s not easy.

It seems like so much time has passed since Miami-Dade voters recalled Mayor Carlos Alvarez and Commissioner Natacha Seijas. It has been less than a year since that historic and proud moment for voters. Today, one week from the January 31st GOP Primary and Special Election, we see dismal turn out (again) of Countywide electors. With two important Charter Amendments on the ballot, I have spoken to dozens of voters whose apathy seems to override the desire for local change.

On Friday, January 6th our dear friend and Guardian Angel Michael Larkin hosted an intimate cocktail reception on the roof deck of Ola - the fantastic Latin American restaurant on Miami Beach. The group consisted of current and potential donors we would like to bring into the family.

As American lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender organizations think about expanding their services beyond U.S. borders, it’s really important to spend time asking if our services are wanted. Sometimes, even when we think we’re doing a good thing, other people don’t want or appreciate our help.

Dear Community Members,

It is with tremendous gratitude and appreciation that we write you today to say thank you, Happy Holidays, and best wishes in the coming New Year.

Thanks to you, our volunteers, Guardians and supporters at all levels, 2011 was one of the most successful in our 18 year history.
